The Song:
The sound FX at the beginning and end of "With All Your Heart" imply that some kind of music machine is being wound up and then played. The artificial quality of the drum loop adds to that image. When the song ends, it sounds like a machine turning off, slowly losing speed, even though the pitch of the piano doesn't change. The windup sound was accomplished with a ratchet wrench. The sound of the machine starting up and shutting down is a coffee grinder, with the speed adjusted digitally and some EQ thrown in to disguise it. Eric Freeman, drummer for The Room Upstairs, hadn't yet joined the band when recording began on "With All Your Heart." Chris Wietzke played a MIDI drum controller for this tune. The drum loop is a combination of two loops from Sonic Foundry's "Acid" collection, with some additional drum machine sounds layered on top.
The Recording:
"With
All Your Heart" was recorded and mixed at Aural Contact Productions
Studio on a PIII, 550Mhz PC using Steinberg Cubase software. No ADAT or
tape of any kind was used--all audio was recorded directly to hard drive
and stayed in a digital environment throughout production.
